This is an exciting opportunity to play a key research role in a new ESRC funded research project critically assessing the options and implications of reforming how legal gender identity is assigned and regulated in Britain.

The researcher’s main responsibilities are to conduct qualitative research, organise and manage project data and contacts, arrange events and meetings, and contribute to the research’s analysis and dissemination.

ESRC Project
In the global north, sex and gender are changing. With these changes come new dilemmas for governance structures that use sex and gender as key markers of identity. Drawing on diverse academic fields, including gender, feminist, trans, and socio-legal studies, this project asks: should government retain the current system of legal gender assigned at birth? And if the present system should be reformed, what are the legal, cultural and policy implications of different alternatives? Taking England and Wales as its legal focus, in light of international developments and debates, this 3-year interdisciplinary project will critically explore different reform options, including the abolition of assigned legal gender. Central to this exploration are questions of social justice, the multi-dimensional character of inequality, modes of regulation, gender-specific provision, and the making of statutory law. This project will explore the controversies surrounding reform, the different stakes that people may have in gender identity, and what it could mean for gender as a concept, practice and regime to change.

The salary will be paid at Grade 6, £33,518 to £38,883 per annum,
plus £2,923 per annum London Allowance.

This post will be Fixed Term Contract for 3 years; start date 1 May 2018.

This is a Full-time – 100 % full time equivalent.

Please submit a reference with your application. The selection process will include a presentation and a panel interview.
