Special Summer Research Seminar: Refugees, Migration, and Politics in Contemporary Europe
Study in Rome, Italy – Earn six graduate credits
May 29 – July 2 (Summer Session I)
In recent years, Europe has seen its most significant refugee and migration crisis since the end of World War II. Political negotiations have helped to reduce the flow, but the crisis continues with refugees and migrants continuing to seek access to Europe through other routes, including across the central Mediterranean. According to Human Rights Watch, more than 280,000 people have attempted the sea crossing between January and March 2017. With its proximity to North Africa, Italy is at the forefront of the European Refugee and Migration Crisis.
For Summer 2017, the Department of Government & Politics will offer two graduate courses that directly address the crisis –
152 Migration Policy and Politics – Politics, policy, and patterns of national and transnational migration; causes, costs, and benefits of migration; policy debates and dilemmas; economic and security dimensions; assimilation, integration, and citizenship issues. 3 Credits
347 Seminar: International Law: Refugee and Migration Law in Contemporary Europe – A research focused seminar addressing the international legal dimension of the current refugee and migration crisis in Europe. 3 Credits (counts for the Certificate in International Law and Diplomacy)
The program will include site visits at a refugee center in Rome, as well as guest lectures from international organizations, and NGOs working in Rome, and across Europe. Courses can be taken separately, or together as part of an integrated Summer Research Workshop.
Courses will be held at St. John’s University’s Campus in the Prati District of Rome, and taught by Dr. Azzedine Layachi, author of numerous books and articles on North Africa, the Mediterranean, and the modern Middle East.
