The intersection of human rights with religious traditions continues to preoccupy much of the contemporary world. The focus of this five-day summer school is on some of the most persistent and complex aspects of the relationship between the two. Their histories have been intertwined yet they often are seen as incompatible worlds. Within this summer school the central question is: What is the role of religious discourse, and the place of religious freedoms, within contemporary human rights frameworks?

Building upon the successfully established extramural evening course in human rights and religions, the Summer School will explore this question broadly across themes including the relationship between religion, human rights and the state, the idea of non-discrimination, the problem of hate speech, and the rights of religious minorities.

The School itself will take place in various locations on the central Dublin campus of Trinity College, including the Long Room Hub, the Irish School of Ecumenics and the Arts Building.

The Committee of the Trinity Human Rights and Religions Summer School includes Professor Linda Hogan and Dr Roja Fazaeli (co-directors), and Dr Ross Holder (programme coordinator), with Mr Ari Fogelson acting as assistant. It is a joint venture of the School of Languages Literatures and Cultural Studies, The Irish School of Ecumenics, The Long Room Hub and the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Studies.
